National Certificate of Educational Achievement: NCEA

Students choose from a range of NCEA courses covering practical and academic skills. Students’ work is assessed against standards which describe what a student can do. NCEA courses are made up of various standards:

Achievement Standards:

In a full Achievement Standards course most of the standards will be assessed by external exams and the more practical or performance aspects will be assessed internally. Students can gain Achieved, Merit or Excellence grades in these standards.

Unit Standards:

Unit Standard courses are fully internally assessed. A student who achieves these standards will receive credits towards their NCEA. Students can only gain an Achieved grade. Unit standard courses are not recommended for students intending to attend University.

Mixed:

Some courses are a mixture of Achievement Standards and Unit Standards.

Gaining a Level 1 Certificate:

This qualification is normally gained in year 11. Each standard has a credit value. As a student gains the standard (with an Achieved, Merit or Excellence) the credits are added together. Students who achieve a total of 80 credits will gain a Level 1 certificate; BUT 8 of these credits must be for English and 8 for Mathematics.

Year 12 and 13 Qualifications:

Level 2 NCEA is normally gained in year 12 and Level 3 in year 13.

Gaining a Level 2 or Level 3 NCEA qualification is similar to Level 1.

Students must gain 80 credits to gain a Level 2 Certificate. 60 credits from Level 2 and 20 credits may be carried through from Level 1.

Similarly students must gain 80 credits to gain a Level 3 Certificate: 60 from Level 3 and 20 are carried through from Level 2.

Students will be able to gain NCEA certificates with Merit or Excellence. Students will also be able to gain Merit or Excellence in a particular subject.
