The aims of the Long Bay ‘Sport Elite’ Programme are:

  • To improve the overall performance of our athletes in their chosen sport. There will be two physical training sessions per week. One session will involve Power Circuit Cross Training and the other, a hard anaerobic endurance workout. Those athletes who join up at the College’s ‘Sportworks” Fitness Centre (at a vastly reduced price) will receive fitness tests and be provided with fully monitored individual fitness programmes tailored to their needs. Programmes will be based on their sporting code requirements as well as their physical skills and levels of fitness.
  • To provide a holistic overview of leadership, sports psychology, goal setting, nutrition, motivation, training methods, sponsorship, and sport safety, all aimed at securing a foundation for the athlete’s sports career pathway. As well as in-house workshops, there will be others provided by our partners, A.U.T and Harbour Sport.
  • To raise the profiles of these students, both within the college and in the community. The athletes will also have the opportunity to rub shoulders and receive advice from local, national and international sports personalities. The college will endeavour to obtain local newspaper coverage of any student(s) achievements throughout the year.

Students are selected for this programme for one or more of the following reasons:

  1. Through observation of excellent skill levels across a wide range of Physical Education activities.
  2. Gaining excellence in a battery of fitness tests during term 1 of the school year.
  3. Through early selection onto senior Long Bay College sports teams.
  4. Possessing the qualities of a good attitude, leadership and being prepared to work hard.
  5. Identified as someone who through working out in ‘Sportworks’ Fitness gym under the guidance of one of our fitness instructors will improve their performance.

Students on the Sports Elite Programme compete in a wide range of sports from Athletics to Triathlon.

The ‘Elite’ athletes are expected to attend the 2 compulsory weekly training sessions on a regular basis and also the Sport Workshops as and when provided. They are expected to be members at ‘Sportsworks’ and to work out there 2-3 times per week on their personalised programmes. To monitor progress and to ensure further progress, fitness testing is available every 6 weeks as is a newly designed fitness programme.

Except for the 6 month membership at ‘Sportworks’, which only costs $80.00, there are no costs for the athletes on the prestigious ‘Sport Elite’ programme. We at Long Bay College hope to provide an affordable, comprehensive programme, in order to give our athletes every opportunity to be the best that they can be in their chosen field.
