THE BREAKERS PROGRAMME
Over the 2011 Basketball season, students from Long Bay College gained work experience as part of the Breakers' volunteer crew. They organised half-time entertainment and competitions, ushered, served non-alcoholic beverages and food. This required a commitment over 10 scheduled games at the North Shore Events Centre. Comments from the students who participated in this programme said that "They would like to do it again next year".

Aviation
Gateway placement with the Auckland Aero Club. This programme is 10 weeks long and includes: 4 flying lessons, a visit to the control tower and to the different aircraft hangers from fixed wing to rotary; where they will see engineers at work on the various aircraft. Experienced flying instructors work with the students on their ATTTO Gateway units in a classroom setting used by trainee pilots. Unit standards include 19 credits at level 2. This can lead to students sitting their Private Pilot’s license at the Auckland Aero Club in Ardmore.
Fashion
Trelise Cooper Fashion House
Most people wouldn’t find; sorting garments, sewing on tags and buttons, inventory or quality control interesting, but for me, Friday is the best day of the week. Twelve weeks ago I began my internship work experience at Trelise Cooper Industries, a very successful New Zealand fashion designer. For seven hours a day I get to be surrounded by all the things I love, this incredible opportunity has and no doubt will continue to give me an insight into this world of fashion, which I am hoping to one day, be a part of. Not only do I get to experience this industry, but this programme allows me to get a one-on-one connection with the people that work in all sections of this industry. Fortunately for me I still have another 8 weeks left of this unbelievable opportunity. I wouldn’t hesitate for a second to recommend the Gateway Work Experience opportunity to anyone wishing to get an insight into the world they hope to one day enter.
Height Access Industry
An unusual placement was in the height compliance industry. Our year 13 student learnt about safety in the workplace and checking on safety equipment in various industries. Leaving school he has gone onto work for a similar company. With further experience and hours completed he will become competent as an Industrial Rope Access worker. |
