BMW__EDGE_PERFORMANCEOn 3 June 2011, 27 Long Bay College music students and staff went to the Melbourne International Jazz Festival. During their time in Melbourne students attended workshops, master classes and may world class concerts and participated in an exchange with Eltham High School; a top music school in the area, and had workshops with two specialist jazz conductors at St. Kevin's School.  The students also did two performances in retirement villages and a sponsored performance at the BMW Edge Theatre.

Comments from some of the students who went on the trip:

"Overall it was an incredible experience truly widening our appreciation for the diversity of jazz.  Mr Morton-Jones, Mr Ronayne and the parents were amazing and enabled us to have an experience of a lifetime" (Matt Jessop, Year 13 and Sarah Adams, Year 13).

MlbrneJazz_Fest"Being on the Melbourne trip is definitely one of the highlights of my school life... a definite highlight was seeing the Aaron Goldberg Trio perform in the Bennett's Lane Jazz Club.  They were amazing performers, and the atmosphere in the club was just great.  I definitely want to carry on with the jazz bank, becuase of the inspiration I received from the Melbourne International Jazz Festival." (Daniel Kemball, Year 12).

"Over the past ten days I've had the most amazing time of my life.  I've seen musicians renowned throughout the jazz world, been to venues packed with intensity and learnt from people who have reached astonishing levels of music.  I've heard some of the most astonishing, breath-taking, intelligent and creative music that the world has to offer".  (Beth Mynard, year 9)

Long Bay College student to travel to London in 2011 to compose music for Shakespeare play

2010-arts-jenniferEarlier this year, Jennifer Hutchison (Year 12 student at Long Bay College) competed in the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand, University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival, Morrison Music Trust Composition Competition. She composed a three minute piece inspired by

Shakespeare’s Othello, and attended the National Festival in Wellington in the beginning of June. From this, she was offered the position of National Student Composer, and the opportunity to attend Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand National Shakespeare Schools Production week with 46 actors, and the National Student Costumier in Dunedin. Here, she was required to write music to accompany three Shakespeare plays, Hamlet, Cymbeline, and The Winter’s Tale, using only what instruments that she or the other actors had with them.

Following the final performance, she was offered the position of National Student Composer with the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand Young Shakespeare Company, travelling to London in July 2011 with 23 other actors. Here she will be required to compose accompanying music for an entire Shakespeare play. Prior to this, she must compose for a short performance again at the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival National Festival next year with the rest of the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand Young Shakespeare Company as a culminating performance to the festival. The grand finale of Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand Young Shakespeare Company is a performance in the Globe Theatre, London. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and has been a dream of hers for a very long time.
